The Grange Therapeutic School

The Grange Therapeutic School now has a fully functioning Nurture base. This has been set up as some of our children have generally missed out on early learning experiences and the opportunities to form secure attachments with significant adults.

This has resulted in a wide range of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties that we feel can now be most appropriately nurtured within this nurturing context. All pupils have access to the appropriate national curriculum but this is delivered within a context that simultaneously supports the development of social and emotional skills and recognises and meets the needs of young children who are functioning at a lower level (both socially and academically) than would normally be expected at their current chronological age.

Our nurture base rooms are intended as educational settings but clearly include elements of a secure and supportive home alongside the normal classroom furniture.

Beth Hodgson (Head of Lower School) and Katherine McKenna (class teacher) along with Dr. Tina Rae have recently published their book, Nurturing Social and Emotional Skills. The book not only sets out to explain the rationale for developing the programme and adopting a ‘nurturing’ approach at the Grange, it also contains the social and emotional skills programme which is set out in easy to follow activities based around the five SEAL domains.

Catering Team do it again!

The catering team from The Grange School has again achieved the highest Food Hygiene Rating of 5, very good, with the Food Standards Agency/Melton Borough Council.  Marie, Mary, Julie, Alison, Jane, Jo and Dot do a fantastic job producing 3 meals a day for all the pupils and staff – A big congratulations from all at The Grange!!

Acorn Care and Education are delighted to announce the appointment of Tamsin (Tammy) Blythe as Principal at Underley Hall School. Tamsin’s career has almost exclusively been spent in BESD residential schools , she has been in senior leadership posts in this sector for nine years, the last five of which have been as Head Teacher of a now very successful Primary and Lower Secondary school in West Sussex. Tamsin is very much looking forward to the challenge of Underley Hall and is looking in her first year to raise the schools positive profile with referring authorities by securing excellent practice, provision and outcomes for our young people. In the longer term Tamsin would like to see Underley Hall flourish as a preferred provider that offers young people with complex needs and the teams around them a unique package of therapeutic and transitional services that compliment their care and education, enabling them to positively contribute to society as young adults.
