Underley Garden achieve Eco Bronze Award

Young people and staff at Underley Garden enjoyed a second Eco Day on the 23rd of April. A Native America theme was devised because of the enthusiasm generated in a recent project and the link to environmental issues.
This followed a very successful day, last March, which was enjoyed by the whole school community. This year’s event included; costume, mask and jewellery making using recycled materials, storytelling, quizzes, breadmaking, face painting, planting, team building games and a barbeque. The day was brought to a close with the presentation, from the Chief Executive of Acorn Care and Education, of the Eco Schools Bronze Award certificate to the Project Coordinator.
The efforts and enthusiasm of the Action Team have resulted in us having swiftly achieving the criteria for the Bronze Award and are now working enthusiastically towards the next level. The Action Team have now formed a number of sub groups including; Biodiversity, Gardening, Recycling, Paper Saving and ICT, Events and Promotion, Policy Research and Development. Ideas generated by these groups include many exciting ideas, some of which are extremely innovative, including; a staff car share scheme, digital “swap shop” and many recycling and resource saving schemes. These initiatives, along with the school’s fast developing gardening project will make a big difference to everyone in the school community.
